During University Scarlett studied fine art and sculpturing which she used to help build up her portfolio which she then used when she graduated in 2008. She focused on how hard it was to find job after she graduated due to the recession and there not being many jobs available. Luckily during her time at university she did some interning for a company called Whoopee club, so she was able to continue working there while also looking for art and design funding to carry on her fine art work which was her main goal at the time.
After a while of checking her emails for funding she applied for her persistence paid off and she was given funding from a charity called Ideas Tap which allowed her to work across theatre, events and music where she was able to make loads of new friends and connections for later on in her career. The next year she took a similar approach of emailing around and trying to get herself out there and was able to get an internship on Fantastic Mr Fox. Her main takeaway from all of this was that persistence is key as once you get out of university you have to make things happen for yourself you cant just expect the jobs to come to you.
Scarlett is a perfect example of why its good to be persistent, as even if the answer is no it still allows you to keep looking out for these jobs and searching for new opportunities. It is also a great way to gain experience as working of different projects and collaborating with lots of different people allows you to build up a social network of people that you may be able to go back to and ask for work as they already know you and know your work ethic. In terms of its relation to me when I apply for jobs after my PGCE the chances are I wont get the first one I apply for so it means applying for many different jobs in an area and trying to keep optimistic that I'm doing everything I can to get this job just as Scarlett had done after leaving university.
