Young Enterprise - The Bird Collective

Updated: Apr 19, 2022

As an extra-curricular activity with the University they wanted to try and get us involved with the whole aspect of design as a team. This was from the designing of a product to the eventual selling of it. This was to help us develop multiple different skills and to introduce some new ones to us such as our entrepreneurial skills from things such as cost of material to selling and giving us all of this knowledge for the future.

The project was created to try and be as sustainable as possible so to begin with we had to obtain some material that had been thrown away to help give it new life in our bird boxes. After this we broke up into different groups to create a design that would eventually be made into a bird box, this helped me develop my small team skills as there was only 2 people to a group. After this we all came back together to compare and critically analyse each one to try develop them.

Later on we had to all come together to cut the wood down and make sure it was all to size so once that was done they could be easily assembled and finished ready for sale. However when we started making it was quite late on into the year before Christmas, this meant that it was going to be hard to sell them as so if there was anything I learnt from this project it was to make sure we get on top of it right from the start to help get the best outcome and keep a project on track.
Overall, despite not being able to sell any of the birdboxes I still found this to be a new useful experience as it has taught me what it takes to run a small business and how much dedication
